Large-Format Tiles Explained: 800 × 1200, 800 × 1600 and 1200 × 1800 mm
By Udaipur Tiles editorial team. Updated 4 October 2026.
A large-format tile should be chosen with the room plan, joint layout and handling route in mind. The three formats in this guide cover nominal areas of 0.96, 1.28 and 2.16 square metres per tile respectively. Those figures help compare scale; the carton’s declared coverage and a measured installation plan must guide the final order.
Translate the units correctly
800 × 1200 mm equals 80 × 120 cm, or 0.8 × 1.2 m. Multiply the dimensions in metres to calculate nominal tile area. 800 × 1600 mm equals 0.8 × 1.6 m, and 1200 × 1800 mm equals 1.2 × 1.8 m.
Do not mix centimetres and millimetres within a calculation. A format written as 80 × 240 cm is 800 × 2400 mm, not 80 × 240 mm. Confirm the catalogue unit and the actual product size before comparing quantities.
Nominal area comparison
Format (mm) | Nominal tile area |
|---|---|
800 × 1200 | 0.96 m² |
800 × 1600 | 1.28 m² |
1200 × 1800 | 2.16 m² |
800 × 1200 mm: 0.8 m × 1.2 m = 0.96 m² per nominal tile.
800 × 1600 mm: 0.8 m × 1.6 m = 1.28 m² per nominal tile.
1200 × 1800 mm: 1.2 m × 1.8 m = 2.16 m² per nominal tile.
These calculations do not include joints, cuts or any allowance. They also do not replace the coverage stated for the exact carton.
What changes visually with a larger format?
A broader face can display a stone or marble-inspired pattern at a larger scale. Compared with a smaller tile in the same area, it can reduce the number of visible joints. It does not create a joint-free installation. Look at multiple sample faces and ask whether a design has direction, random faces or a required arrangement.
A very large pattern can dominate a compact room. Compare it against the room proportions, furniture and lighting rather than assuming the largest size is always the most refined choice.
How do joints and cuts affect the decision?
Ask the installer to draw a proposed layout using actual dimensions and the intended joints. Note doorways, corners, pillars and fixtures. A format may produce balanced cuts in one room and awkward narrow strips in another. Where offcuts can be reused, the ordering allowance may differ from a plan where every piece needs a particular direction.
Do not promise reduced waste from size alone. Layout is the evidence.
Can the tiles reach the room?
Measure doorways, stair turns, lift access and the final room entry. Discuss how the exact size and thickness will be handled and cut, and whether the installer has the appropriate equipment and experience. Settle access before the order; an attractive sample does not answer a handling problem.
Substrate condition, installation products and joint requirements also need review against the current manufacturer guidance.
Which ranges are relevant?
Porselano includes large-format ranges in these sizes, plus larger collection-specific options. Marbonite also includes selected big-format ranges. Confirm the exact code, body, finish, dimensions and available quantity; range coverage does not prove local stock.
Frequently asked questions
Do large-format tiles need joints?
Yes. Follow the applicable product and installation-system guidance.
Can I calculate cartons from nominal tile area alone?
Use the exact carton coverage and an installer-reviewed quantity, with an appropriate allowance for the layout.
Are bigger tiles better for every small room?
No. Room geometry, cuts, access and the visual pattern may favour a different format.
