How Many Tiles Do You Need? A Measurement and Ordering Guide
By Udaipur Tiles editorial team. Updated 4 October 2026.
Measure the area, check the exact carton coverage and review a layout allowance with your installer before ordering tiles. Dividing room area by nominal tile area gives a starting count, not a final order. Cuts, breakage, spares, joints and pattern direction can change the quantity.
Measure the room in consistent units
For a simple rectangular floor, multiply length by width in metres to obtain square metres. Measure the actual room rather than relying on an old plan if it may have changed. For an irregular floor, divide it into manageable rectangles and record the sections so the total can be checked.
For walls, multiply each wall’s width by its tiled height and add the results. Identify openings and excluded areas. Do not subtract every small opening automatically: cuts and layout can mean the material requirement is not reduced by the full opening area. Ask the installer to review the calculation.
Convert units before calculating
A 600 × 600 mm nominal tile measures 0.6 × 0.6 m in the calculation, giving 0.36 m² per nominal tile. A size written as 60 × 60 cm means the same nominal dimensions. Do not multiply one dimension in millimetres by the other in metres.
If a quote uses square feet, keep the conversion explicit. One square metre is approximately 10.764 square feet. Round carefully and make the quantity basis visible when comparing quotations.
A worked example with stated assumptions
Assume a rectangular room measuring 4.0 m by 3.0 m: area = 12.0 m². Assume a 600 × 600 mm nominal tile: area per tile = 0.36 m². Without an allowance, 12.0 ÷ 0.36 = 33.33, so a simple nominal count rounds up to 34 pieces.
Now assume, only for this illustration, that the installer has agreed a 10% allowance for this specific layout. The planning area becomes 13.2 m². If the actual carton states 1.44 m² coverage, 13.2 ÷ 1.44 = 9.17 cartons, rounded up to 10 cartons. That order covers 14.4 m² according to the assumed carton label.
The 10% allowance and 1.44 m² carton coverage are example assumptions, not universal rules or a claim about an actual product. A different layout or carton can give a different order.
Why does the layout matter?
Diagonal layouts, patterned arrangements, large formats and narrow edge strips can affect cuts and reuse of offcuts. A product with a directional design may limit which pieces can be reused. Review the starting point and visible edges on a measured plan before deciding on the allowance.
Separate decorative strips and feature areas from the base tile. Counting everything as a single area can leave the right total but the wrong mix of pieces.
What should you check on the carton?
Confirm exact product code, finish, size, pieces per carton, declared coverage and batch/shade information. Nominal dimensions are a useful guide, but the declared coverage of the selected carton is the ordering reference. Record the agreed quantity and product details on the quote.
Ask about spare material while the same batch is available. Do not assume a later purchase will match perfectly or that additional cartons will remain available.
What should you send to Udaipur Tiles?
Send the measured dimensions or plan, category, preferred brand, product code if selected, size, finish, area or quantity, project location and desired date. Mark any unmeasured areas as estimates. The team must confirm stock and commercial details; the installer should review the final quantity and layout.
Frequently asked questions
Is 10% extra always enough?
No. It is an illustration here. The appropriate allowance depends on the measured layout and product.
Should I round up pieces or cartons?
Confirm the actual sale unit and carton coverage with the team, then order in the applicable unit.
Can I mix batches to make up a shortfall?
Discuss batch and shade information before accepting a mix; do not assume an exact visual match.
